First proposed and adopted in late 2015 by almost 200 countries, the Paris Climate agreement aims to unite various countries to join in a group effort to reach a climate neutral state by 2050. Their goal is to limit global warming to 2°C, or even 1.5°C if possible. This agreement is a sign of hope that climate change can be stopped and reversed in time.

Why did Trump withdraw from the agreement and why was this a bad decision?

Two years after the Paris Climate Agreement was introduced, former president Trump had announced a plan to withdraw from the agreement. This became a reality on November 4, 2020 when the United States officially withdrew from the agreement. Trump, with his radical ways, reversed much of what the Obama administration had put into place to protect our environment and reverse climate change. This would have set the United States back four years had Trump been reelected as president. Luckily, Joe biden, former VP for Obama, gained the title of president and on his first day in office signed an executive order to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement. The United States officially rejoined on February 19, 2021, asserting the counties willingness to make a change.

How will the Paris Climate Agreement reach its goals?

By participating in the Paris Climate Agreement, countries are required to submit a report on a regular basis that states their current emission outputs and their progress on achieving the agreement’s goals. Countries that have adopted the agreement have access to financing, technology, and building-capacity support to help them achieve the agreement’s goals. The main purpose of the Paris Climate Agreement is to unite countries in an effort to stop and reverse climate change. No one country can solve this alone. Climate change affects the whole planet. So the whole planet must be involved in making the change for climate change.
